District Elections

Overview

On June 21, 2017 the City Council voted 4-0 to approve the Communities of Interest Map. This map will be presented to the City Council at the fourth public hearing on July 25, 2017. At that meeting, staff will propose introduction of an ordinance approving the district boundaries and election calendar for the 2018 election.

Communities of Interest: With the intention of preserving as many Communities of Interest as possible, this draft map was designed to use major thoroughfares and geographic features as district boundaries whenever possible. This working draft map was created in public at the Community Meeting held on 05/23/2017, and was slightly changed on the Community Meeting on 05/30/2017.

 Background

On May 3, 2017, the Oceanside City Council adopted a resolution to begin the process to transition to district elections.  Boundary lines for districts will be drawn and adopted in a public and transparent process.  The City will hold four public hearings before the City Council and five community meetings over the next 90 days.  It is anticipated that beginning November 6, 2018, City Council members will be elected “by district” instead of from across the city.  This means that those who run for City Council will need to live in the district where they seek election. The Mayor's seat will continue to be elected at-large and will not occur until the 2020 election.

Your insight into our community will help determine the shape of the City Council districts.  Encourage your friends and neighbors to attend. Your voice matters!
